One of the most beautiful rock castles is situated by the Czech Road (Česká silnice) north of Vysoká Lípa on the red trail leading to the Small Pravčice Gate (Malá Pravčická brána).
Originally held by the Berkas z Dubá, the castle was established in the 13th century. In the early 15th century it was pledged to the Vartenberk family, and played a part in the wars between the Vartenberks, Saxony and Lusatia. It was abandoned in the early 1500s. Šaunštejn offers marvellous views of the landscape dominated by the hill of Růžovský vrch.
