With its 556 m above sea level, the Great Winterberg is the tallest mountain on the right side of Elbe in Saxon Switzerland. On the Elben left side it is beaten by 4 meters by Grosse Zschirnstein. The lookout tower here was founded in 1840, it is freely accessible during the local restaurant's opening hours. The mountain hotel beside the tower was built between 1840 – 1846 in Switzerland style, and has become a preserved historic sight since then. In the years 2001 – 2002, the Ice House (Eishaus) was reconstructed to its current pupose as self-accessible information point of the National park Saxon Switzerland.
