Grabštejn, also known as Grafenstein, was originally a Gothic castle from the 13th century, which during the 16th century was converted into an imposing Renaissance chateau. In 1704 Grabštejn was bought by Jan Václav Gallas, and the history of the castle was linked to this family, or to the Clam-Gallas family, until the end of World War Two. Grabštejn again began to flourish under the Clam-Gallases. The art-loving owners not only did up the chateau, but also added to the art collections and re-landscaped the park.
In the second half of the 20th century the castle was used as a base by the army, after which it was abandoned. Reconstruction work began in the 1990s, aimed at doing as little damage to the monument as possible and retaining its authenticity.
